Facts:
Mercury's intermediate rear-wheel-drive luxury coupe.
1971-1973 models were built on the new Mustang chassis, and a convertible
version was available. These years moved away from performance and toward a
luxury image. They were all based on Ford's intermediate platform that ran from
1972-79. That platform included the Torino, Montego, Cougar, Thunderbird, LTD
II, and Ranchero. They shared most of the body shells but had unique exterior
surfaces. In 1974, the Cougar name was transferred from the Mustang-based
platform to the intermediate Montego 2-door body shell. In 1974 1/2, Ford
introduced a Cougar clone called the Gran Torino Elite. It looked like a smaller
Thunderbird and shared the same 2-door body shell with the Cougar. From 1975-76
it was simply known as the Elite. In 1977, the entire intermediate line had
restyled body shells. The Torino, Elite, and Montego names were dropped. In it's
place, there was the new LTD II, Thunderbird, Cougar, Cougar XR-7 and Ranchero.
The 1977-79 LTD II was offered as a 2-door, 4-door and 1977-only wagon. The
Cougar line was expanded to offer the same body styles as the LTD II including a
1977-only wagon. The Ranchero was restyled with LTD II styling and remained a
Ford exclusive. The 1977-79 Cougar XR-7 used the same 2-door body shell as the
regular Cougar and LTD II 2-door models but had a unique deck lid, tail lamps
and special vinyl roof/quarter window trim. The 1977-79 Thunderbird used most of
the LTD II and Cougar 2-door body shell, but it got a unique wrap-over roofline
and rear quarter panels, a special rear quarter window design, unique deck lid
and tail lamps. This Thunderbird replaced the larger previous model and also the
Elite.
