Facts:
Built on the Fox platform shared by the Ford Mustang
and Fairmont, available as a two-door rear-wheel-drive luxury sport coupe. In
1980, The LTD II, Ranchero, Montego and non XR-7 Cougars were dropped. The
Cougar XR-7 was downsized along with the Thunderbird to a long wheelbase
Fairmont platform. In 1981, the Cougar line was expanded again as a twin to the
redesigned Ford Granada which was essentially an alternately styled up-level
Fairmont. The were offered as two door and four door sedans and, in 1982 only, a
station wagon. These existed alongside the Cougar XR-7 which remained a twin to
the Thunderbird. In 1983, the sedan and wagon Cougars were dropped and restyled
as the Marquis in four door and wagon models only. 1987 20th Anniversary edition. GS, LS, XR-7
trim levels. 1981-1982 saw four-door and station wagon versions.
1983 introduced an new aerodynamic body style and dropped the four-door and
wagon models. In 1989, the Cat moved onto the MN12 platform, shared by the Thunderbird and
1993-1998 Mark VIII. The XR-7 in 1989 and 1990 came with a
supercharged 3.8L V6. The MN12 chassis also featured rear independent
suspension.
