1964 Mercury Cyclone - Glenn Guthrie started racing modifieds in 1950,
and like most other drivers, used Ford coupes with flathead motors. He was quite
successful, and in 1959 he was NASCAR's Modified Division National Champion. He
started driving a 1964 427 Cyclone in 1968, and won the Manassas VA. Late Model
Sportsman Championship in that year. In 1970, he took his 1967 Cyclone to
Daytona for the Permatex 300.
Early in the race, he blew a right side tire and hit the wall at
175 miles per hour, and suffered serious injuries. This put him on the sidelines
until NASCAR's doctors where satisfied with his recovery. When he resumed
racing, it was just at the local tracks, Manassas, VA. and Beltsville, MD.,
driving a 1969 Cyclone, then a 1970 Cougar. Sadly, Glenn discoverd he had ALS,
(Lou Gehrig's
disease) which in the early stages affects the body's motor controls. He retired
from his job with Ford's Lincoln-Mercury Division, and from racing. He passed
away in 1983.click on image for a larger view...
