Mercury was conceived by Edsel Ford to bridge the gap between Ford and Lincoln.  The Mercury Eight was introduced in 1939 and was designed to be a larger and more powerful car than Ford.  Mercury was (and is) an entry-level luxury brand, and provided competition for Oldsmobile and Buick.

Mercury's performance heritage dates back to 1952 when a used 1948 Mercury Sedan-Coupe placed fourth in the PanAmerican Road Race.  During the 1960's, aerodynamic 427-powered Marauder fastbacks and Cyclone Spoilers were champions on the NASCAR ovals.  Parnelli Jones drove a Marauder to victory on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 1963 and 1964.  The Cougar nearly beat the Mustang in the 1968 Trans Am racing series.

Today, Mercury still offers upscale models with more luxurious appointments than Ford.  It's closest rival is still Buick.  The upright chrome grille still represents Mercury style.  Sixty-seven years and counting, the Winged Messenger still flies high!
